Community Group This Week!


These are the questions that we'll be discussing together in this week's Community Group. We'll be meeting at the Caylor's house--(see meetup info here). Community Group begins at 6:25, and ends at 8:00. Childcare is provided--we'll see you there!
This week's passage:   Hebrews 4:14-16

Explore (Digging in to understand the passage)
  • What is the connection between these verses and the ones that preceded them?
  • Are these verses meant to be a warning, an encouragement, an explanation? How do they fit the pattern of Hebrews? (see chapter 2:14-16)
  • What kind of High priest is Jesus? How does this make him better compared to earthly priests?
  • How could Jesus be tempted without sin?
  • What do we receive when we come to Jesus, according to verse 16?
Connect (Applying the passage to our lives)
  • How might you explain to someone about the difference Jesus' perfect priesthood can make in his or her life?

  • What do we learn about God's promised rest from this passage?
  • What role does faith have in hearing God's promises, according to verses 1 & 2?
  • What warning do verses 1 and 11 repeat?
  • What does the author mean by "the word of God" in verses 12 and 13? How has he used it thus far in Hebrews?
  • What effect does the word of God have, according to verses 12 and 13?

Connect (Applying the passage to our lives)

  • How would you explain "God's rest" to a non-Christian?
  • Are verses 12 and 13 comforting or disconcerting to you?

Explore (Digging in to understand the passage)


  • What are the key words and phrases repeated in this passage? Why are they important?
  • What leads people to fall away from God, according to verses 12 and 13?
  • What does exhortation mean? In what ways does this passage call readers to exhort each other?
  • Read Numbers 14:1-12 and 26-31. What was the sin of Israel that God judged? How does it parallel the warning in Hebrews 3:12-14?
  • What did "entering God’s rest" mean for the Israelites in Numbers 14? What does it mean for the readers of Hebrews?
  • What condition is there for entering God's rest, according to verse 19?
Connect (Applying the passage to our lives)

  • What practical implication(s) from this passage do you see?
  • How might we begin to live out verse 13?
